In 2008, the BBC launched the Digital Media Initiative, an effort to move the entire organization off physical videotape and onto fully digital production. Five years later, in 2013, the BBC cancelled it after spending 98.4 million pounds, most of it written off.

A parliamentary review found the failure had little to do with software. The system was built around a version of the BBC’s work that never matched how programs actually got made.
